Below is a listing of opportunities that the Social Ministry Committee provides throughout the year at First Lutheran.

Serve on the Social Ministry Committee:The Social Ministry Committee extends Christian compassion and helpfulness to the ill, the aged, the orphaned, the underprivileged, and the imprisoned and, in general, to persons of all ages in need of aid in body or soul.  The Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Meals on Wheels Driver: First Lutheran Church supplies drivers for Meals on Wheels for a month at a time approximately every six months.  Drivers are to pickup meals at the Algona Senior Center and must have their own cars and be free to deliver meals starting at about 11:15 a.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers usually volunteer for one week.

Visit Homebound: Visit members who, because of illness or infirmity, are homebound. Those who would enjoy being visited should call the Church Office.

Visit Hospital and Nursing Home: If this item is checked you will be put on a list of members willing to visit members who are hospitalized or in nursing homes.

Provide Transportation: Provide transportation for those who no longer can drive themselves to church, doctor appointments, shopping, etc. On occasion a member needs transportation to Mason City or Rochester for outpatient cancer treatments. Occasionally relieving family members or other friends of this task is greatly appreciated. You determine the distances and times you are willing to drive.

•    To Worship: You will be responsible for picking up and taking back home a member of our congregation. Every effort is made to match you with an individual in your area of town. You will be put in contact with your person prior to the weekend worship.
•    To Appointments: By checking this on your Time and Talent form you will be put on a list of individuals that will be willing to be called to assist members needing a ride to local appointments.

Provide Part of a Meal: There are occasions when individuals or families are in need of meals delivered to the home, for example, a single person living alone who is too ill to prepare a meal, a family with small children where the mother or father is hospitalized, etc. You agree to bring over part of a meal, such as a salad, a hot dish, and vegetables.

Help Supply Algona Food Pantry: Contribute non-perishable food and household items to be distributed to needy families in the community. A grocery cart is located in the north hallway for donations.

Participant each Spring & Fall in Adopt a Highway Clean-up: Be a part of a team of First Lutheran members that clean the two-mile stretch of our Adopted Highway along Highway 18. This is usually done on a Saturday morning or a Sunday afternoon.

Visit the Church of the Damascus Road (Prison Ministry) Occasionally a visit to the Church of the Damascus Road is scheduled. If you check this item you will be placed on a list of members who would like to attend worship on a Wednesday evening in Fort Dodge.

Support Adopted Families: Through the Kossuth County Relief office names of families are “adopted” and during the month of December many opportunities to donate are given through the newsletter and bulletin. Members with children are encouraged to help make deliveries as a family learning experience.

Collect & Transport Supplies to Global Health Ministries in Minneapolis: As supplies are received, we periodically make a trip to the Global Health Ministries office in Minneapolis.
